Strategic Flood Risk Assessment
Sedgemoor District Council prepared a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment for the District in 2008, to ensure that the risks from flooding were central to strategic planning decisions undertaken as part of the Sedgemoor Local Development Framework. To inform the early stages of the Local Plan Review an update to the SFRA level 1 report was undertaken during 2015.
Current national planning policy in the National Planning Policy Framework aim to ensure that wherever possible, development is located in those areas at least risk of flooding. Where this is not possible, developers need to demonstrate that there are no alternative sites at lower risk, that the proposal is compatible with the identified flood risk or that an exception can be justified, and that the development is safe from flood risk both now and for the lifetime of the development.
The Strategic Flood Risk Assessment continues to provide the information needed to allow these tests to be applied in Sedgemoor and is used to help judge planning proposals in the District. However, the flood risk mapping it contains represents a 'snapshot' in time at the date of the study. For the most up-to-date mapping, please refer to the Environment Agency Flood Risk Mapping. It is however intended to review the level 1 SFRA regularly going forward to ensure it remains as up-to-date as possible.
The SFRA Level 1 and 2 reports are available to download below. In addition a draft protocol prepared in conjunction with the Council and the Environment Agency is available to download from this page.
The approved Parrett Estuary Flood Risk Management Strategy 2010 identified construction of a tidal surge barrier as the most appropriate solution to protect Bridgwater and the Somerset Moors and Levels from tidal flooding. To help inform the preferred location a Residual Flood Risk Assessment was undertaken in 2017 to map the flood risk and flood hazard for different scenarios and barrier locations. The report and associated mapping can also be downloaded below
