If so, your local authority can help you with a new one-stop shop service, which is being launched on Thursday, 8th November. Somerset Independent Plus is aimed at keeping people in their own homes for longer by offering practical and financial help in a number of situations. Somerset Independence Plus can offer advice and financial assistance that covers a number of improvements, adaptations or repairs that might need to be carried out on your home. Some services are free, whilst others have a fee. 08/11/18

Somerset Independence Plus is a partnership between Sedgemoor District Council, Mendip, Taunton Deane, Somerset County Council and West Somerset Councils offering a range of options to vulnerable people across Somerset to meet their housing related needs. Flexibility of resources (including Disabled Facilities Grants) to increase independence and better outcomes for people. The service is a joined up approach across health, housing and social care.

The partnership is hosted by Sedgemoor District Council and the staff will be based at a new centre at Chelston Industrial Park near Wellington.  The Independent Assessment Centre will house a number of staff from the partner organisations bringing together expertise into a single 'one stop shop' . Equipment will be available to trial with the aim of maximizing each persons independence and to support them to remain in their own home. Staff will be on site to provide advice and information and to help clients navigate the system to access assistance with rehousing and home adaptations

There will be more centres in other districts in the future.

The centre at Chelston Industrial Park Wellington TA21 9JH will not be open to members of the public on the 8th but to professionals. Village agents, GP's etc who are likely to be referring people into the service. The centre will be open to members of the public as a drop in on Mondays from 9.30am until 4pm. District Councils have a statutory duty to provide 'Disabled Facilities Grants'. These grants are funded by the government to help you adapt your home to make it suitable for a disabled person.

Occupational Therapy Week is a yearly celebration of the occupational therapy profession. It is an opportunity for occupational therapists to be loud and proud; and also encourage other people who have benefited from occupational therapy to tell the difference it has made in their lives.
