Grants for Sports and Leisure

Any community group, sports club or school from Bridgwater can apply for a project grant, provided they can meet at least one of the criteria and are within the eligible area. Successful projects and schemes must seek to increase participation in sport and physical activity. Groups are being encouraged to make sure they benefit from a £500k fund given to Sedgemoor District Council by EDF Energy as part of its plans to build Hinkley Point C. 07/03/18

Calling all community groups, sports clubs or schools - Sport and leisure funding now available

This scheme is known as the Sports and Leisure Fund, which was set up to support community improvements to mitigate the impacts on local sports and leisure facilities and recreational open space in Sedgemoor from the building of Hinkley Point C. This is the second round of grants.

SASP (Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership) has been commissioned by Sedgemoor District Council to organise two community briefing events at the YMCA, Friarn Avenue, Bridgwater, TA6 3RS, so that any interested groups can get information and advice.

These events will be held on:

Thursday 22nd March, 2018 between 1830 hrs and 2000 hrs or

Tuesday 27th March, 2018 between 1830 hrs and 2000 hrs

The meetings aim to:

  • Explain the criteria for potential bids and discuss individual projects.

  • Explain the bidding process and timelines.

If you would like to attend either of the meetings, please e-mail stating your name and organisation represented to Colin Johnson by Monday 19th March, so as to judge numbers likely to attend.

The Hinkley Point C Site Preparation Works application (3/32/10/037) was consented by West Somerset Council on the 27th January 2012. In granting the application a series of mitigation measures were secured via a legal agreement (Section 106). One of these measures was the creation of a Sports and Leisure fund. The Sports and Leisure Fund is to be spent on improvements for communities, for the purpose of mitigating impacts on the provision of sports/leisure facilities and for recreational open space in West Somerset and Sedgemoor arising from the Development and or other elements of the Project.

As part of the legal agreement, Sedgemoor District Council must ensure that at least the following sums of money are used for Sports and Leisure Fund projects, for the purposes of providing new, or improving existing sports/leisure facilities, in the following areas:

  • £500,000 in Bridgwater.

  • £500,000 in Cannington. This is being utilised in conjunction with Cannington Parish Council

  • £250,000 as a contribution towards the cost of the swimming pool at Trinity Sports and Leisure. This money has been invested in the pool by Sedgemoor District Council.
