Town Centre Skills and Employment Hub exceeds expectations

The Employment and Skills hub in Bridgwater launched by Sedgemoor District Council has welcomed more than 850 visitors and seen 270 people sign up for courses in its first six months. 09/11/17

Opened by Olympic Gold Medallist Sally Gunnell in April, the hub known as 'Under Construction' is based in the historic quayside building Lion House and is proving popular with learners and training partners alike

Designed to be a 'one stop shop' for those seeking training and employment support, 'Under Construction' aims to support people in work as well as those who have never had a job and act as a resource for employers.

Since the grand opening, the hub has provided more than 300 Information, Advice and Guidance sessions; held 35 events; attracted almost 500 followers on social media and signed up eight partners.

Sedgemoor Employment and Skills Outreach officer, Laura Fowler, said: "Under Construction has got off to a flying start and already exceeded our expectations. We have held recruitment events and are advertising jobs and it is so encouraging to see people taking up posts as a result

"In particular we have managed to help 17 people back into work and that is especially satisfying. We are grateful to our partners and to the funding from EDF Energy via the Hinkley Point C project as it is really having a positive impact."

Portfolio holder for Economic Growth, Cllr Anne Fraser, said that the development of Hinkley Point C provided a once in a generation opportunity to transform the employment outlook for the district which needed to be able to take advantage of it and ensure it was sustainable.

"I think Under Construction is doing an excellent job in helping to prepare people for work on the project and for vacancies arising as a result of workers leaving posts to work for EDF so it should make a big difference."

Jo Smith, HR Manager at RK Bell Group, said: "We have found the support that Under Construction offers invaluable. It is helping local people into work and also helping local businesses with recruitment such as with a 'drop in centre' we held there which enabled us to recruit for a new supervisor."
