Help for small businesses

In 2017, all businesses were re-valued for their business rates. Sedgemoor District Council collects business rates for the Government and is introducing a discretionary scheme that will help small to medium-sized businesses who experienced an increase due to the national revaluation with their rates. 09/11/17

Business rates are charged on most non-domestic properties, like:

  • shops
  • offices
  • pubs
  • warehouses
  • factories
  • holiday rental homes or guest houses

Small to medium sized businesses (SME's) have less than 250 employees and are generally businesses, companies or enterprises including self-employed; family firms; partnerships, associations and companies. They will have either an annual turnover not exceeding £40m or an annual balance sheet not exceeding £34m.

National companies/organisations; large businesses; betting shops; doctors surgeries; banks and charities are not included.

To Apply - Businesses who can apply are ones whose rates increased by 10% or more. Businesses who think they may qualify should contact Sedgemoor District Council on 0300 303 7801 or nndr@sedgemoor.gov.uk. The Team will be happy to advise on this and any other business rates reliefs free of charge.
