Healthy Lifestyle Opportunities

Here is a list of some healthy lifestyle initiatives that Sedgemoor District Council are supporting in the district.

Zing Somerset

Zing is a motivational tool to help you start and sustain physical activity. Simply sign in, pick your activity and log how many minutes you have done. Try the monthly challenges, find new activities and see the places where you can do physical activity. Activities include: home exercises, community fitness classes, out and about, sports events, individual sports, team sports, inclusive sports, adventure sports and corporate activities.

The Sedgemoor Community Health Fund

Nine projects were awarded funding to set up new initiatives aimed at improving healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity levels and educating Sedgemoor residents about managing a healthy weight. Successful projects include:

New Leaf Life Design- Rural weight management challenge for communities on the Quantock Hills. Bridgwater Buccs Basketball Club- Easter and summer holiday camps plus new disability basketball sessions. Bridgwater Martial Arts Academy- Martial Arts for weight loss. Amateur Swimming Association- Swimfit workout systems installed within three Sedgemoor based swimming pools: Trinity Sports and Leisure, Burnham Swim and Sports Academy and Kings Fitness and Leisure. Somerset Activity Sports Partnership- Healthy Weight project working with 5 Sedgemoor based primary schools. Shipham First School- Healthy cooking and growing club. The Peoples Plot- Community food growing project. The Clocktower Wellness Centre- Wellness Matters weight management programme. Link Education Centre Medical Pupil Referral Unit- Healthy Me programme of cooking skills for students.

NHS Health Checks Programme

The NHS Health Check programme is a national preventative programme which is intended to help people stay healthy for longer. These free health checks are now offered by the majority of GP Practices in Somerset and are available once every 5 years to anyone aged between 40 and 74 with no pre-existing vascular condition.   • Flexercise training

    Flexercise is a countywide initiative promoting physical and mental health and wellbeing through chair based activity.

  • Gym Buddy scheme

    The scheme initially formed part of a national project developed by the English Federation of Disability Sport but has been adapted to fit the needs of local people living with long term health conditions and disabilities in Sedgemoor.

  • Postural stability classes

    Classes have been set up across Somerset to help people who have experienced a fall, are fearful of falling, have poor balance and poor posture.

  • Pro Active Exercise Referral Scheme

    This scheme was established by the Somerset Physical Activity Group and encourages people living with long term illnesses or injuries to maintain and/or improve their health through a personally tailored exercise programme in an accredited leisure centre locally.

  • Sedgemoor health walks

    Sedgemoor District Council support a community programme of Health Walks delivered within the district. The walks aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the community by encouraging exploration of the local environment, socialisation and becoming more physically active.

  • Workplace health

    Sedgemoor District Council can support workplaces in promoting good health and wellbeing amongst their staff.
