Homelessness and Housing Advice

Sedgemoor District Council offers a wide range of housing advice for everyone who needs it. We will do our best to help whether you are a tenant, home owner, a landlord or have no home of your own.

The Housing Advice Service at Sedgemoor District Council provides advice and assistance on a wide range of housing related issues including renting privately, affordable home ownership, homelessness, illegal eviction, registering for social housing (Council or housing association accommodation). All of our advice is free and confidential.

Our Mission Statement - Our vision is to provide an honest, quality advice service, with customer care being paramount. We will do this by:

  • Providing high quality advice and assistance in order to prevent homelessness
  • Assisting vulnerable people to maintain independent living and
  • Treating all customers with respect and dignity

We also hold a weekly Housing Advice surgery at the Princess Hall, Burnham on Sea every Wednesday. There are drop-in sessions from 9.30am to 4.00pm.

Young People (16-24yrs)

If you are a young person looking for housing advice or support we have a one stop shop called Routes, which is located at 14-16 St Mary Street, Bridgwater. Routes is managed by Somerset Coast YMCA and you are welcome to drop in and speak to an advisor or support worker between 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday or call 01278 726040.

  • Homefinder Somerset

    Homefinder Somerset is the way of finding social housing to rent. It lets you select the homes you would like to be considered for within Somerset. Anyone with a local connection to the Homefinder Somerset partner local authorities can apply to join the scheme including existing tenants who would like to transfer.

  • Affordable Housing options

    Sedgemoor District Council is the largest provider of affordable housing in Somerset with approximately 4,000 homes. There are also numerous Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) providing affordable housing across Sedgemoor.

  • Preventing homelessness

    All councils have a duty to prevent homelessness where possible. The Preventing Homelessness page shows ways in which we may be able to help.

  • Homelessness

    There are a number of reasons why people become at risk of losing their home. The Housing Advice Team work to try and prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place.

  • Help moving into Private Rented Accommodation

    Sedgemoor District Council works in partnership with local agencies to provide several schemes to assist people in housing need move into private rented accommodation. These include assistance with bonds and deposits, rent in advance and help to buy furniture.
