£73,000 for Sedgemoor's community groups

A massive £73,000 has been awarded to community groups in Sedgemoor at a packed Funding Den evening on Tuesday, 30th January at The Princess Hall in Burnham on Sea, supported by Sedgemoor District Council, Bridgwater Town Council and Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council and hosted by SPARK. 02/02/18

The idea for the format dreamed up after the Big Lottery Fund announced additional available funding of £73,000 for the Sedgemoor area.  Fifteen groups presented on the evening; they had been shortlisted from the forty applications received.  Each group pitched their project to a judging panel of four, comprising of Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Cllr Mike Creswell, Burnham on Sea and Highbridge Town Council, Cllr Mike Facey, Bridgwater Town Council, Cllr Kathy Pearce and Big Lottery Funding representative, Tom McCulloch.

Ten of the fifteen projects were successful in getting funding on the night, with the remaining applicants being offered further support from both SPARK and Big Lottery Fund to re-apply for funds in the future.

The atmosphere was electric as the winners were announced and as the cheques were handed over there was a lot of excitement and tears, the young people who took part were particularly animated.

Successful bidders were:

  • Bridgwater Parent Support Group

  • Burnham and Highbridge Men's Shed Society - £9,300

  • The Cheddar Community Partnership CIC - £9,200

  • Sedgemoor Playday - £2,550

  • Hands of Change - £10,000

  • Somerset Time for Youth - £10,000

  • Towards Tomorrow Together - £4,000

The other groups who were not successful on the night were offered further support from both SPARK and Big Lottery Fund to re-apply for funds in the future.
