Become an Ashton Windmill volunteer

We are currently looking for volunteers to help on Saturdays and weekdays.

Ashton Windmill, near Chapel Allerton, is open on Sundays and Bank holidays from Easter until September, and on Wednesdays between 2:30 and 4:30pm throughout July and August. Group bookings are taken at other times by arrangement.

Windmill volunteers are on the whole locally recruited and we currently only need people if they are available to help on Saturdays or weekdays. Sedgemoor District Council fully insures volunteers on site under the age of 70, and provides half-rate employers' liability cover for those aged between 70 and 74. Only public liability cover is provided for those aged 75 and above.

We would particularly welcome a few more active volunteers with a technical interest of one kind or another to help with maintenance.

There is free car parking on site. Volunteers need to be aware that there are no toilets or telephones on site - the nearest public toilets are several miles away in Wedmore. Volunteers do not work alone but with a partner volunteer.

To become a volunteer, you must:

  • be friendly, be able to provide a good customer service, and feel confident with the public
  • be able to access the site of your own accord and be confident using narrow steep stairs
  • have an interest in technology, and local history would be advantageous
  • be confident with taking small amounts of money and giving change without any help from a till
  • be able to keep written records of visitor numbers and sales
  • arrive promptly and remain on site throughout the two hours as the opening times of the Windmill are published.

Please contact us if you are interested in becoming an Ashton Windmill volunteer.
