Markets were necessary, not only as a way for the population to trade in the necessities of life, but also as a means of generating revenue for the local manor or castle. The middle of the 13th century saw Bridgwater with 13 stalls and 5 shops along with just over 300 burgages. Traders included goldsmiths, wine merchants and the various trades associated with the cloth and wool industry. There were tuckers, dyers, spinners and drapers, weavers and shuttle makers.
